Do your clients ever complain to you saying that they are bored with single hair colors for their hair systems and that they would like highlights instead? If they do but you are unsure about the types of hair color highlights available for custom orders you should read this blog.
What are highlights?
Highlights are usually added to a hair replacement system or wig to brighten up the overall color of the hair and add softness and dimension to it. A hair system or wig could be made with two or more colors. Excluding the base hair color, all the other colors are considered as either highlights
Are there different types of highlights?
There are two main types of highlights: spot highlights and blended hair colors. The following pictures clearly show the difference between the two types.
Spot highlights
Evenly-blended highlights
Spot highlights:
To make spot highlights – also known as streak highlights – we normally add the highlights by making different-sized circles. These spots can be made all over the hair system or wig or just in particular areas, such as the front, top, or crown.
Checkerboard highlights:
Checkerboard highlights is another type of spot highlights. This is a traditional design for spot highlights and is popular with many clients.
How to order a hair system or wig with spot highlights for your clients?
- Tell us the base color
- Tell us where to add the spot highlights
- Specify the diameter of the circle or the size of the square, the percentage of the highlight color and the distance between the spots or squares. For example, 1” diameter and1/2” apart. If you have a template or mold, you could mark the spot highlights or checkerboard on it as this will make it easier for us to accurately add the highlights.
Blended highlights:
Blended hair color is when two or more different colors are evenly mixed. It is very fashionable.
How to order hair systems with evenly blended highlights for your clients?
- Tell us where your clients want highlights added. Normally, clients will choose highlights all over but some clients may like to add highlights to certain areas as we mentioned earlier.
- Let us know the percentage of the base color and the highlight colors, such as 70% #2 color, 30% #4 color. Since different factories have their own color charts, we recommend that you send your color rings or hair samples to us or order a color ring from us. This way, we will be able to accurately match the hair color without any difference in color.
Some tips when opting for hair systems or wigs with highlights:
As we have said the main purpose of adding highlights to your hair replacement systems or wig is to brighten up the overall color of your hair and your face and add softness and dimension to it. The shade of someone’s highlights is determined by the base/natural color of their hair and their complexion. No matter what the base color of the hair, you should never go more than three shades lighter than it. For example, if you have jet black hair, your highlights should be a shade of dark brown; brunettes should go for copper or caramel hues, and blondes should opt for a lighter shade of blonde. Go lighter than 3 shades and you run the risk of looking like zebra!
