FAQs

What is a man weave unit?

A man weave unit, also known as a hair weave for men, a black man weave, or an African American male toupee, is a modern hair restoration solution designed for men suffering from hair loss or thinning or for those who are looking for Afro-textured hairstyles. The hair is permed into thousands of very tight, thick curls or coils, catering to the kinky African hairstyle.

What kind of hair do you use on man weaves?

At New Times Hair, our men hair weaves are made of high-quality Chinese human hair, which is robust and thick enough to be permed into these curls or coils.

How do I choose between different man weave bases?

Like hair system bases, men hair weave bases also encompass lace, monofilament, skin, lace front, hybrid, etc.

Among these, monofilament makes the most durable bases, and lace is the most breathable. PU skin is the most clingy and easy-to-maintain base material, ideally for new man weave wearers.

Some bases, such as lace or mono, have PU perimeters around the sides and the back to strengthen the overall base structure.

Some, such as lace-front bases for man weaves, only have the front section in lace to give a natural-looking, undetectable hairline and save the wearer a lot of money.

Like most hair systems, the perming is the only difference between man weave units and other toupees. All our hair systems have straight human hair. However, with man weaves, we perm the hair into curls, coils, or man weave braids upon the customer’s special request. The hair we use for man weaves is the most durable, robust Chinese hair.

With criteria provided for all base materials, there’s no such thing as the best man weave base. Go for lace if you or your customer are after the most natural look and comfort. After low maintenance, go for PU skin if you are a new weave wearer. Get monofilament if you want durability. If none suits you or your customer, get custom orders.

How long does a man weave last?

Typically, the black man weave can last from a month to a year, depending on how the wearer looks after it.

Monofilament man hair weave usually last 6-7 months, followed by lace and skin man weaves. Monofilament is the most durable man unit base and usually has a PU perimeter to strengthen its overall structure.

Full French lace hair units for men usually last around 3 months. As an upgraded version of French lace, Swiss lace costs slightly more and is more comfortable and natural-looking. However, as it is more delicate than French lace, Swiss lace only lasts around 2 months.

PU skin hair units for men have their bases in different thicknesses. The thicker the base, the longer the lifespan of the man weave. For example, thin skin base man weave units with a 0.03mm base can only be worn for a month, while 0.06-0.08 mm and 0.1 mm or above skin base men hair weave can last for 4 months.

Reinstallation: The lifespan of the man weave only means from the moment the new hair unit gets installed to the moment it can’t be used anymore, and the wearer has to dispose of it. However, most man weaves get loose within their lifespan due to sweat and regrowth of the natural hair and must be reattached every 3–4 weeks.

Can you shower with a man weave on?

The short answer is, “Yes, you can.” Like other hair replacement systems, man weaves are attached to the wearer’s scalp using tape or liquid adhesive. Men with weaves cannot remove them whenever they want. Man weave units are made for wearers to shower in them. But you must take precautions when considering it.

1.    Keep hair untouched for at least 12 hours: First, ensure your man weave remains untouched for up to 12 hours. It’s also recommended not to shower within 24–48 hours of installing a man weave unit. The bond or adhesive needs time to settle and secure the hairpiece to your scalp.
2.    Shower the hair but not too often: As a male weave wearer, your hair unit must be washed regularly but not too often. Wash it while showering is the most convenient option. However, if you must shower daily, ensure you don’t wash your man weave daily. On most weekdays, wear a shower cap to shower to prevent the male weave from getting wet.
3.    Avoid hot water: Avoid using hot water to shower the man’s hair weave. Hot water will easily cause the glue or tape to loosen up or melt, so the man weave units may slip. Especially with inject-hair weave units or v-loop hair, the hot water may expand the pores into which the hair is injected, leading to hair shedding. Always use lukewarm water.
4.    Sulfate- and paraben-free shampoos and products: Use shampoo, conditioner, and other hair products that don’t contain sulfates or parabens. Sulfate, parabens, and salt dehydrate the hair. Condition the hair instead and moisturize it.
5.    Rinse thoroughly: Rinse the hair thoroughly, ensuring no shampoo or product remains, as they will damage the hair.
6.    Sleep dry: Always ensure to sleep with the hair absolutely dry. Air drying is preferred. If you must blow-dry the hair, always keep it on low heat. Never sleep with wet hair, so the man weave doesn’t tangle or knot and later cause breakage or shedding.

Can I swim in a man’s weave?

Yes, absolutely! Follow the proper steps, and swimming in a man weave will be hassle-free for you or your customer.

Tip 1: Use waterproof Afro hair unit tape or adhesive to install the hair unit. Hence, it grips the scalp soundly and securely.
Tip 2: Rinse the man unit with freshwater before swimming to prevent chlorine or salt damage to its hair.
Tip 3: Rinse and shampoo your afro-hair toupee thoroughly after swimming to wash out excessive amounts of harmful substances.
Tip 4: Condition the man weave unit to provide extra moisture and relieve the impacts of chlorine and saltwater.

Is a man weave unit permanent?

Man weaves, or hair weaves for men, are not permanent. We call them “semi-permanent.” It can stay attached to the head for 3–4 weeks each time it gets installed and can last for a month to a year with proper care. The lifespan of man weaves varies from one unit to another.

How is a hair weave for men secured on the scalp?

The male weave is typically secured to the scalp by tape or adhesive. To create a stable grip, we must first shave the scalp. Some users who do not want to shave their scalp and still have natural hair can pick clip-on man weaves.

However, a stylist must ensure the wearer’s scalp is absolutely oil-free. Wipe it thoroughly with alcohol. With some new man unit, they go through a greasing procedure before coming out of the factory to give the hair a shine. Remove oil from the base of the new man weave by wiping thoroughly with alcohol pads.

How do I attach a man weave unit?

If you are a personal user, we strongly recommend having your man weave installed by a trained hairstylist. Here are the steps to follow if you are a hairstylist looking for man weave installation tips. Read our tutorial(with video) for beginners to install a men’s hair system.

Step 1: Determine the area where the man weave will be applied. Mark out the contour.
Step 2: Shave the contoured area of the scalp and clean it as thoroughly as possible, ensuring it’s absolutely oil-free.
Step 3: Wash the man weave base thoroughly, ensuring it’s oil-free.
Step 4: Apply tape or liquid adhesive to the wearer’s scalp, where the male weave will cover. Leave it to dry.
Step 5: As the glue or tape is almost dry, stick the man weave to the clean-shaven area of the wearer’s scalp.
Step 6: Cut the base into shape, ensuring a perfect fit. Be careful not to cut any hair off.
Step 7: Cut or style the hair. It’s all yours now!

As a personal wearer, where can I get a man weave installed?

We strongly recommend installing your man weave by licensed hairstylists for personal wearers. Please contact us if you are still looking for a local stylist. We will help you find one of our licensed partnering salons or stylists near you.

How do I remove and maintain the hair weave for men?

Properly removing and cleaning a man unit is critical, as it maximizes the lifespan of the hair unit. Follow the five steps below to properly maintain a man unit.

Step 1: Spray the C-22 adhesive solvent on the base. Then, peel the unit slowly and carefully from the scalp, bit by bit. Be careful not to pull so hard that you may tear the base. This step may take some time. Be patient!
Step 2: Soak the hair unit in cool or lukewarm water to saturate it thoroughly. Never use hot water!
Step 3: Place the man weave on a flat surface and clean off the adhesive or tape residue. Remove any excess residues with your hand by gently stroking them.
Step 4: For stubborn residue along the edges, apply more C-22 adhesive solvent. Brush it with a fingernail brush to loosen the residue, and break it free.
Step 5: Wash the male hair weave with sulfate-free shampoo to remove all the residue.
Step 6: Lie the male hair weave on the dry towel and dry it by gently dabbing it with another towel.
Step 7: Reattach the hair weave again.
