“The more you know about sports, the more you realize you don’t know because you know that sports evolve.”
“If you know how to shoot a basketball, surely there’s a place for you in this country… but if you are not active with guarding, I will never put you on my team.”
The statements belong to legendary coach Bill Self, who lost 18 games in a row and decided to take action to effect change. And the changes he made got him to the top.
Who Is Exactly Bill Self?
His full name is Billy Eugene Self, Jr. He was born on December 27, 1962. Bill Self is an American college basketball coach. He has been the head men’s coach at the State University of Kansas since 2003.
During his 19 seasons coaching the Jayhawks, he led them to 16 Big 12 regular-season titles, including an NCAA record of 14 straight regular-season titles.
He also guided the Jayhawks to the 2008 and 2022 NCAA titles and four appearances in the NCAA Final Four (2008, 2012, 2018, and 2022). 2017 saw Self become a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Self finished the 2021–22 season as the fourth-most successful active head coach and the 18th-most successful Division I coach in NCAA history. He is the first coach in Kansas history to have guided Kansas to three NCAA Tournament appearances. He is the second-most successful coach in Kansas history, trailing only Hall of Famer Phog Allen.
Does Bill Self Wear a Toupee?
There are many mysteries in college basketball. However, one thing that has always interested the fans the most is: Does Bill Self have a toupee on?
Is Bill Self Bald? Let’s take a closer look.
When Did Bill Self Start to Wear a Toupee?
For over a decade, I’ve been closely watching Bill Self. I don’t care that they went to three Final Fours, won multiple Big 12 titles, and won the national title in 2008. No, I only watch the mic’d-up bits of KU broadcasts to get a better view of Self’s dome.
Something seems strange. Self has a lot of space between his scalp and his hair. I dusted off some old files and looked at his time in Illinois and Tulsa to learn more.
- January 29, 1998: During a game versus SMU, Bill Self, then Tulsa’s basketball coach, watches from the sidelines. A 35-year-old man appears to have a typical head of hair. That is the gold standard for Bill Self’s hair.
- March 15, 2003: Bill Self, currently in charge of Illinois, plans throughout the Big Ten Tournament. He has lost a significant amount of hair in the past five years.
- March 22, 2003: One week later, Bill Self’s hair appears vibrant and new. A significant shift. Has he switched shampoos? Conditioner? Rogaine was not an option. According to their product, it can take up to four months to see effects. Are those hair plugs? Perhaps. That provides the strongest argument against Self’s natural locks.
- April 4, 2008: To prepare for the 2008 Final Four, Kansas coach Bill Self oversees a practice. There is unquestionably some thinning. Because it reminds me of the first Illinois picture, it deserves to be mentioned.
- March 31, 2016: After receiving the 2016 NCAA Coach of the Year Award, declared addressed a press conference: “The puzzle is fitting together.”
- November 9, 2021: Bill Self would soon be coaching the Kansas Jayhawks in the Champions Classic game versus Michigan State. Self’s hair on his head had stayed the same for five years. You can cool cement by placing him in front of a fan.
Enough of what I saw. Bill Self most likely owns a hairpiece, even though he hasn’t admitted it himself as the basketball coach. The evidence is overwhelming, and I’m not the only person who thinks so.
Drew Franklin, a presenter on Kentucky Sports Radio, backed up my assertion in 2017. Regardless of rivalries, KSR is a hard-hitting media organization. Furthermore, Bill Self’s toupée has a number of Twitter profiles. Seeing other users support me makes my point stronger. They are, if anything, happy about it. Jokes have no place on Twitter.
The Best Toupee is for the Better Self
Drew Franklin, the KSR pregame host, had a better say on whether Bill Self wears a toupee and what toupee or hairpiece he’s been wearing.
According to one of his comments on the KSR official website, Franklin had seen Bill Self wearing a hairpiece, one of the greatest marvels in college basketball. He was awed by the hairpiece’s art, unlike anything the wig world had ever known.
Unlike five-dollar wigs, Bill Self’s toupee was a work of art. The attention to detail, the precision, and how the follicles embrace Self’s bald scalp were all examples of exceptional craftsmanship nearly entirely hidden from view.
Franklin asserted that he’d seen it. He’d seen it up close and personal from no more than a foot away. Was he even so sure about the distance?
“Bill Self’s hair is a lie. If I’m a terrible judge of a great hairpiece, a Kansas booster would support my claim and confirm that Self paid top dollar for his surgically-installed wigs.” That’s what Drew Franklin said in his comment.
What’s the Fuss about Toupees or Hair Wigs on Bill Self?
Are we smart? No, we are fools. Why? It’s because we’re trying to be clever to prove Bill Self’s toupee-wearing status, while the guessing game keeps many of us on the run, and the hair or toupee, whatever stays on top of Self’s head, looks seamle
The toupee looks real because it blends perfectly with the Self’s natural hair and looks the best on Bill himself. That’s why it looks natural and makes him look like his better self.

In terms of toupee-wearing, the most successful work is making the hairpiece look natural on the wearer’s head. When looking at them, people don’t have to guess that there’s something on his head other than his natural hair.
